Fnatic announced on October 26 that Lauri "Cyanide" Happonen, who won the first League of Legends World Championship with the organisation, has died, Inven Global reported. Happonen was 31.
Fnatic said it was deeply saddened to learn that Happonen had died earlier this year, Inven Global reported. The organisation did not say when or how he died.
How the news came out
Finnish outlet Ilta-Sanomat first reported the death on Monday, October 26, citing confirmation from Finland's Digital and Population Data Services Agency. GosuGamers (gosugamers.net) relayed that Happonen died on July 31, 2026, so word reached the public nearly three months later.
The cause of death has not been made public.
Fnatic posted its statement on X. It drew more than 1.27 million views and 41,000 likes by the evening of October 26 (PT), according to Inven Global.
Riot's tribute
Riot Games' official LoL Esports account posted a message a few hours after Fnatic. It described Happonen as a legend for all time, Inven Global reported. It added that he won Season 1 Worlds with Fnatic and remains the youngest player to lift the Summoner's Cup.
The first world title
The Season One Championship was Riot's first world championship. It was played over three days at DreamHack in Sweden in June 2011. Fnatic, then branded FnaticMSI, beat Against All Authority (aAa) in the final and took the US$50,000 first prize.
Team SoloMid of North America finished third.
GosuGamers puts the final at 2-1. Happonen was 16 when he won, and that age record still stands. The win was later commemorated with the Fnatic Jarvan IV championship skin.
Four years at Fnatic
Fnatic said Happonen spent four years with the organisation. According to GosuGamers, he stayed on the roster as European competitive League of Legends developed. He played alongside xPeke, Paul "sOAZ" Boyer, Bora "YellOwStaR" Kim and Carl Martin Erik "Rekkles" Larsson.
Together they secured three consecutive EU LCS titles between Spring 2013 and Spring 2014.
Happonen appeared in public one last time at the EU LCS Classic Showmatch during Karmine Corp's Roadtrip event on July 25, 2026. He reunited there with several players from the early days of the European scene. He died six days later.
Tributes from the scene
YellOwStaR, Happonen's former Fnatic support, shared a personal message recalling their years together and the July reunion. Rekkles and sOAZ also paid their respects, as did Fnatic founder and CEO Sam Mathews.
G2 Esports, SK Gaming and GIANTX remembered him as well. So did Fabian "GrabbZ" Lohmann, Andrei "Odoamne" Pascu and Christopher "MonteCristo" Mykles.
