Just months after acquiring EA.
Unity could be acquired by a consortium of investors including Silver Lake and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).
According to Reuters, people familiar with the matter report that the game engine company has recently had a talk about the matter, months after private equity firm Silver Lake, investment firm Affinity Partners, and PIF bought Electronic Arts for $55 billion.
The consortium discussed acquiring the company for $25 billion, but Unity has just released its financial report for Q3, announcing that its strategic revenue grew 59% YoY and delivering its first GAAP profitable quarter since its IPO, so the price might also grow.
It's important to note that no deal has been made, although Unity has been working with an investment bank to evaluate its options, Reuters says.
Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in gaming in recent years, but this rapid acquisition of major companies is a little concerning and could alert antitrust organizations if the deal goes through.
Another reason for keeping an eye on it is the fact that EA shut down BioWare, the creator of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, soon after it was bought by Silver Lake, Affinity Partners, and PIF. The game studio's co-founder Greg Zeschuk said that it's because "these people have ever made a game, like, never really sat and made one, like, from start to finish, even a small thing, they just don’t know how it works."
Meanwhile, a players' petition submitted to the Canadian government has collected enough signatures to be considered in Parliament.
