- Diablo is getting a brand-new animated series currently in development with Netflix.
- Blizzard has not revealed the story, cast, animation studio, or release date yet.
- Diablo’s rich lore gives the upcoming series plenty of stories and characters to explore.
The world of Diablo is heading beyond games once again, as Blizzard Entertainment has announced that it is working with Netflix on a new animated series based on the iconic dark fantasy franchise. The project is still in development, so there is very little to go on right now.
The company has not revealed a release date, animation studio, cast, or even the story details yet, adding that more information will be shared in the future.
The series will expand the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary beyond the games
Considering the amount of lore available in Sanctuary, there are plenty of directions Blizzard could take. Will the series adapt one of Diablo’s existing stories, explore a particular character, or tell something completely new within Sanctuary? The guesses are hard to make.
Diablo has been around since the original game arrived in 1996 and has grown into one of Blizzard’s biggest franchises, with Diablo II, Diablo III, Diablo IV, and Diablo Immortal on mobile expanding its world across multiple generations. The series’ dark fantasy setting, demons, angels, and other stories certainly provide plenty of material for an animated adaptation.
The announcement has already sparked plenty of reactions from fans. Some are simply excited to finally see Diablo’s lore adapted into a dark fantasy show, while others are hoping for something with the atmosphere of Castlevania or the high production quality seen in animated game adaptations such as Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
This also comes at an interesting time for games and animation. More game franchises are making the jump to anime and animated series, including Wuthering Waves, Free Fire, and Among Us to name a few. It is becoming another way for developers to expand their worlds and reach audiences beyond the games themselves.
For Diablo, though, there is still a lot left unanswered. Blizzard says more details are coming in the future, so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to find out exactly what this Hellish adaptation has in store.
